Almost August. The heat has done its best to drive everyone out, and yet here you are, still looking for things to do with your kids. Respect. School is still a month away, which means you have time to actually enjoy the tail end of summer before the chaos of uniforms and packed breakfast/lunches kicks in.
Some of the things I have for you this week: a fighter jet simulator, Japan taking over Times Square Center for two days, Dubai's first manga-themed sportainment park, and a world championship most people don't know is open to spectators.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT
➤ FIGHTER TOWN SIMULATORS
I really wanted to find something different other than the malls, play areas, outdoor stuff, etc. Not that those aren’t great, but there has to be more, right? So I found this.
Now mind you, this isn’t free and is a bit more expensive than some of the other stuff out there. With that said: let’s look at Dubai's first fighter jet experience centre. With the help of some cool VR, you're in the cockpit of an F/A-18 Hornet or F-14 Tomcat. Dang!
You can choose your session: Solo flight to get your bearings, a Carrier Landing session, a full Pilot Training lesson with an instructor in real-time, or a Dogfight against AI or a friend in a linked simulator. No prior experience needed for most.

CELEBRATE JAPAN
Speedy Comics' Celebrate Japan event is bringing authentic Japanese food vendors alongside the cosplay, gaming, TCG tournaments, artist stalls, workshops, and cultural experiences it's known for. Omakase Ya Dubai is the food partner — so you can actually eat well while the kids are in their element. Two full days. Free entry. One of the better weekend outings for older kids and teenagers this summer.

SUMMER SURPRISES PERFORMING ARTS FEST

COMICAVE SKETCHOUTS
ComiCave doing what ComiCave does — digital art, illustration, handmade crafts, the creative community gathered in one place. The right Saturday morning for a kid who draws obsessively and needs proof that other people do too.

Arabian Wildlife Center, Sharjah Desert Park — Kids under 12 free, adults AED 20. One ticket, four attractions: Wildlife Center, Natural History and Botanical Museum, Children's Farm, Arabian Garden. Absurd value.
RC Cities Café — Meydan Avenue, Dubai. AED 35–50/vehicle. Open daily 10am–10pm. Dubai's first remote-controlled gaming café. You get a proper coffee. The kids get a mini excavator in a sand construction site. Bring your own RC for AED 30, or use theirs. Fun for all ages.
Abu Dhabi Children's Library — Free membership. 35,000+ books across three floors built to feel like a giant pop-up book. Treehouses, sand-dune soft play, a Book Mountain auditorium. One of the best free things in this country that most families haven't done.
Happy Fun Rashadia Park Inflatable Zone (Ajman — short drive) — 50% off on Tuesdays and Thursdays only: AED 17.50. A genuinely excellent bargain on a slow weekday.
Altitude Arena, Sahara Center (Sharjah) — Go-karts, bowling, and trampolines under one roof. Good for mixed-age groups who can't agree on anything.
IKEA Free Americano — Festival City and Jebel Ali IKEA. Every weekday. You're a parent in August. You need coffee. No further justification required.
NEW AND NOTABLE
ZAMANIA
Dubai's first "sportainment park." Built around the Zantaro manga universe (think ninja, shadow powers, a secret double life), the whole space is themed around the story. Inside: trampolines, sports areas, soft play, excavators and driving for older kids, workshops, and a Japanese-style café. The manga angle makes it different from every other indoor play space in the city, and it's the kind of thing a 10-year-old and a 15-year-old can both enjoy without either being bored.

421 SUMMER PROGRAMME
421 Arts Campus has a summer programme running right now. The Public Studio offers drop-in sessions in tile painting, print-making, and zine-making. The 421 Summer Club runs kids through two weeks of movement, making, and creative learning on campus. There’s also an interactive "Human in the Loop" sound installation that runs through the summer and is specifically designed for visitors to touch, play with, and discover. Free to explore, workshops have their own pricing.

ILLUSION CITY
Every room is a different illusion — gravity flipped, walls closing in, floors that aren't where they appear to be. Peak experience for the 4–7 bracket who are at the "wait, how did that happen?" stage, but older kids and adults end up just as confused. Budget 90 minutes. Right next to Ain Dubai, easy to make a Bluewaters afternoon of it.

➤ UAE JUJITSU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
One of the world's largest martial arts events, happening this week, and it's open to spectators. World-class athletes from across the globe competing at Mubadala Arena — alongside the World Cup U14 youth competition. A sporting spectacle for older kids who need something real to watch.

HIDDEN GEM
KHOR KALBA MANGROVE CENTRE
Sharjah. AED 15 adults / Free under 12.
The UAE's oldest mangrove forest, a place where the air smells different (in a nice way) and your phone has nothing useful to say. Walking trails, kayaking, bird watching, and the Arabian Collared Kingfisher — a bird that exists almost nowhere else on earth. Kids who've been bouncing off mall walls all summer respond well to it. Drive east, pair it with a seafood lunch in Kalba, you've got a good family day.

The UAE's first school-based motorsport programme at GEMS School of Research & Innovation — weekly sessions at Dubai Autodrome covering racing, engineering, simulation, and strategy. Former F1 driver Robert Doornbos is the ambassador. Open to School Years 4–9.
SAFETY NOTICE
Dubai Police issued a reminder urging parents to closely supervise children at pools and beaches this summer. With the school holidays still in full swing, worth a read. Five seconds of attention can prevent the kind of thing you can't undo.
